Reiki

Reiki is an energy balancing and de-stressing technique that also stimulates the body’s natural self-healing ability. It was developed around the turn of the 20th century by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk, although its origins are believed to date back thousands of years. The word Reiki is Japanese and is made up of two characters, Rei and Ki. Rei means “universal” and Ki means “life force”.

Life force is the subtle energy that flows through all living things. Its existence has been recognised in the East for thousands of years - yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Kung and acupuncture all work with it. When it is abundant and flowing freely we are less likely to become unwell. If it is low or its flow becomes impeded we are more vulnerable to illness. Reiki is a simple but powerful way of drawing on the unlimited universal source of this life force energy.

Treatments

A Reiki treatment involves light physical touch, with no need to remove clothing. The practitioner holds her hands gently and non-intrusively in a sequence of positions on or just above the body of the recipient. Each position is held for several minutes. A treatment lasts about 45 minutes. The treatment is usually given with the recipient lying on a couch but can also be given in a seated position.
Treatments are usually experienced as deeply relaxing and calming. The beneficial effects may be felt for several days after. Straight after a treatment many people feel slightly light-headed, which is quite normal. Just take your time to sit up and again to stand up. Reiki is a complementary therapy and is not used to diagnose and does not replace medical treatment. It can be used with confidence alongside conventional medicine and other natural therapies.
